8th doctor 3.7: the eight truths
« Thread Started on Oct 25, 2009, 2:13pm »

latest eighth doctor story is the first half of a two part season finale, which brings back some old enemies.

London 2015. The Doctor is looking for a lost space probe. Lucie Miller's feeling just plain lost, on a world she no longer quite belongs to. Perhaps there's someone who can help. A chance encounter with an old sparring partner leads Lucie to the Eightfold truth - a bunch of crystal bearing cranks who reckon a rebel sun is on it's way to purge the Earth. As if!

But what if they're right?

The apocalypse is upon us. As humankind counts down the last days of it's existence, the Doctor races to unmask the eightfold Truth - and uncovers an old and deadly enemy

EPISODE ONE

London not quite as we know it - not least with a change to one famliar part - and lucie has the same realisation about the doctor and the permancy of things as a few other companions have gone through.

The resulting uncertainty is well played by sheridan smith. As is the following indoctrination. which is why lucie doesnt recognise a familiar face who crops up at the end.

Meantime the doctor helps out some scientists who are nicely open minded enough to let him get on with things. intriguing hints about something being out in earth orbit follow. and the doctors' genuine concern for a companion in possible trouble is great.

pretty creepy cliffhanger also.

fairly rattles by, this episode. great start.

EPISODE TWO

an initially surprising bit of narrative development, thanks to the doctor managing to forestall a regeneration in a rather novel manner.

Worldwide panic is very convincingly realised. As is lucie not being quite herself, and schisms in the ranks of the cult.

The doctor's on the offensive in a wonderful manner, not remotely concerned about where he lands the tardis. But even he can't beat human nature.

and whilst things that were set up at the start of the season finally come into play, the monsters make their move. just a shame there's no fade into the end music as it makes the final line a bit abrupt. but still, great episode.

9.5/10. really good episode. really good start to the season finale
